Frequently Asked Questions
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) also known as “Obamacare”, is a law enacted in 2010 to make health insurance more affordable and accessible for Americans.
It provides subsidies to help lower-income individuals and families pay for insurance, expands Medicaid coverage, and ensures that insurance plans cover essential health benefits like doctor visits, hospital stays, and prescriptions.
The ACA also prevents insurance companies from denying coverage due to pre-existing conditions and allows young adults to stay on their parents’ insurance until age 26.
Affordable Care Act (ACA) Plan, Marketplace Plan, On-Exchange Plan and Obamacare all refer to the same health insurance plans.
The Open Enrollment Period when you can enroll in or make changes to your ACA coverage. It runs from November 1 to January 15 each year. Outside of this period, you may qualify for Special Enrollment due to specific life events like marriage, the birth of a child or loss of coverage due to job loss.
Private health insurance is insurance sold direct from a carrier and not on the government marketplace. Subsidies are not available for these plans. These plans are typically for those with higher income that do not qualify for a subsidy and where the marketplace plans are too expensive.
